  1. As of 5th edition it doesn’t matter, it’s always the longer of the two axis. Example, enemy is 40ft away and 30 ft in the air, for the purpose of any ranged attack the enemy is 40ft away.

  2. Our party was mounted on pegasus’s (pegasi?) While fighting the big, bad dragon while at varying altitudes. Had to whip out a calculator and do this for our Eldritch blasts and witch bolts

  4. You don’t need any math to figure this out. BLESS has a 30ft range and you’re 30ft in the air. If they aren’t directly below you it won’t reach.

  5. That’s what they don’t teach you in math class: geometry isn’t just about memorizing a bunch of formulas with no real rhyme or reason behind them. It’s a tool you can use to do things.

    That really seems like a thing they should teach you in math class.

  6. Technically correct. It’s not especially useful in your real life, but it’s very useful in your fantasy life.

  7. I don’t think 5e uses Euclidean geometry when calculating distances for spells and effects. If a target is 30 feet away horizontally and twenty feet away vertically then you consider the distance between you and them as whichever value is larger.

  8. Dnd 5e exists in a non euclidean space, therefore, the Pythagoras Theorem does not apply.

    In other words, 30 feet is 30 feet and save yourself the headache

  9. Man, I always tell my students that knowledge is like a tool. If you don’t have a hammer then of course you’ll never use a hammer. You’ll use less effective method like beating a nail with a shoe but you’ll never use a hammer if you don’t have it. If you have hammer then you’ll use a hammer.
