Legendary racing at Daytona 1970

A beautiful picture of the very first time that the Porsche 917K and Ferrari 512S competed in international competition. This took place at the championship season opener at the Daytona 24 in 1970. In this photo is the leading Gulf 917 of Jo Siffert door to door with Mario Andretti in his Ferrari 512 S. The Siffert Porsche would finish second behind their other team car and Andretti would finish third. Following these two cars is the Porsche Austria 917K of Kurt Ahrens, Jr. and Vic Elford and two more Ferrari 512s. While John Wyer thought his Gulf Porsches were to be the only factory entry the #3 Porsche Austria 917K had a lot of factory assistance and this did not make Wyer happy. Of the five brand new and untested Ferrari 512s to enter this race the Andretti car was the only one to finish. His co-driver was Arturo Merzario. Getty Images.
