  2. This is the plan. Russia puts in their oar this time to help the Democratic nominee, so Trumpublicans have all the excuses they’ll need to call the election illegitimate and suspend it in the event that they lose.

  3. I think it’s very telling how Sanders handled this vs how Trump did. I think anyone with half a brain could have predicted this move by Russia, what’s important is that Sanders didn’t suddenly cosy up to Putin

  4. Russia will surely be getting caught “helping” any opponent to Donald Trump so that in the event he loses the election he can cry foul.

    Russia’s goal is chaos.

  5. The difference is that Bernie has said and will vehemently say again to stay the fuck out of our elections. Republicans on the other hand will deny it’s happening and blame Ukraine

  6. It’s pretty clear there’s some effort involved. We see it here on r/politics all the time. Seeding lots of divisiveness within the party, just to cause instability. There’s so many so called progressives that go hard against anyone that isn’t Bernie, even if most of their policies align, that it’s lacking in logic.

Edit: RIP Inbox, and thanks for the gold, strangers!

My plan is generally Blue No matter Who. My preferences are one of the progressives, and if not them, I’m fine with one of the moderates, or hell even Bloomberg. They’re all way better for the country than Trump, even if my absolute preference would be a progressive.

  7. Super odd that this is coming out *right after* Joseph Maguire resigned because Trump got mad at him for telling the House that Russia was helping Trump get elected in 2020.

  8. >“I don’t care, frankly, who Putin wants to be president,” Sanders said in a statement to The Washington Post. “My message to Putin is clear: Stay out of American elections, and as president I will make sure that you do.

    Excellent statement.

  9. Same as 2016.

    >“Specialists were instructed to post content that focused on ‘politics in the USA’ and to ‘use any opportunity to criticize Hillary and the rest (except Sanders and Trump – we support them),’” the indictment said.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/02/17/indictment-russians-also-tried-help-bernie-sanders-jill-stein-presidential-campaigns/348051002/

Detailed extensively in the Mueller Report as well.

  10. It is worth noting that the entire reason Russia is interfering in the election is that Republicans want them to do so.

    * They blocked election security.
    * They spent years trying to submarine an investigation into the Russian attack.
    * The Republican House did an intentionally slipshod investigation into the Russian attack.
    * They spread conspiracy theories to exonerate Russia for its attack.
    * They refused to enact meaningful sanctions.
    * They lifted sanctions against a chief perpetrator of the attack.

There is no reason for Russia to be attacking us again. We had four years to impose consequences, lock down election systems, educate the public, and develop deterrents.

But Republicans stood in the way of everything.

  11. I’d also note that “trying to help” is awfully suggestive. It is not as though Russia would be generously offering assistance. This is an attack in the guise of “help” and should be viewed as such.

  12. I don’t know why they favour Sanders more than anyone else, and while people will have their guesses, no one in here does either. But I know I’ve seen them, and I’m sure you have too.

Sanders is, in my opinion, a great candidiate. I want him to win, and I’ve defended his policies a great deal. But I’ve also defended his allies from craved and angry Sanders supporters. While I’m sure many of them are genuine, I think this is fuelled a great deal by Russia.

Here is my guess as to why they are picking Sanders: because he’s divisive. It’s really that simple. Sanders wants the greatest change for America. I think it is change for the better, but it doesn’t matter, it is great change. His followers are frustrated, his critics are fearful. That makes Sanders a recipe for divisiveness. I think Russians are playing into that and intentionally making Sanders supporters angrier, attacking his oppenents with great furosity. I’ve seen plenty of things written about Buttigeg, Warren, Biden, and yes, even Bloomberg, that don’t hold up under any level of scrutiny. I’ve debated against these points.

The point is, if Sanders wins, the perception created about his online supporters are going to scare off a lot of people. If he loses, the anger Russia fueled is going to cause a lot of people to stay home.

Don’t fall for it. Literally every person on that stage is better than Trump. Yes, even fucking Bloomberg. I hope to hell he isn’t the nominee, and his debate performance was obysmal, but he isn’t Trump. I’m willing to defend this, if need be, but honestly, I don’t like Bloomberg and I’d really, really rather not have to defend him.

What I’m saying is, Russia is looking for fuel to add a fire to. They are looking for things in America that can tear people apart and add sparks. Don’t fall for it. Support your candidiate, support Sanders, vote for him in the primary. But along the way, make sure you make it clear you are voting Blue no matter what. Make sure you do not attack the other candidates without it being verified information, without it being warrented.

Make sure if you see your fellow supporters being assholes, you call them out on it. They might be Russians trying to get *you* to become angrier, to become more divisive, and to tear the party apart.

They are here, on Reddit, and they are going to try to make you hate everything that isn’t Sanders, not because Sanders is better for Russia than Trump, but because the angier you are and the more hate you display, the better things are for Russia.

Get rid of Trump, improve your country, that is your primary mission. The world is watching you (Canada here!), don’t fuck this up. Don’t let Russia win. You need to unify as much as possible.

edit: Oh, and by the way, if any Russians are here, fuck off. Sanders doesn’t want your help. Sanders supporters don’t want your help. Just fuck the fuck off.

  13. If I wanted to destroy American democracy, I would influence the primary to push Democrats into a brokered convention, then release evidence that the vote was corrupted, then watch the Democrats tear themselves in half and lose to Trump in November.

  14. This is a good moment for Bernie. He can show the country what a leader should/do say when it comes to Russian interference.

    Fuck off Russia

  15. >>I don’t care, frankly, who Putin wants to be president. My message to Putin is clear: Stay out of American elections, and as president I will make sure that you do.

Bernie Sanders giving notice to our number one geopolitical foe not to interfere in our elections.

    >>Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. Let’s see if that happens. That will be next. Yes, sir.

The president of the United States, asking our number one geopolitical foe to interfere in our elections.

  16. Unlike Donald Trump, [Bernie Sanders denounces Russia’s reported efforts to aid his campaign](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2020/feb/21/democrats-prepare-to-vote-in-nevada-amid-controversy-over-donald-trump-roger-stone-and-russia-live-coverage-bernie-sanders)

    > Bernie Sanders denounced Russia’s reported efforts to interfere with the 2020 election on the Vermont senator’s behalf.
    >
    > “Unlike Donald Trump, I do not consider Vladimir Putin a good friend. He is an autocratic thug who is attempting to destroy democracy and crush dissent in Russia,” Sanders said of the Russian president.
    >
    > “Let’s be clear, the Russians want to undermine American democracy by dividing us up and, unlike the current president, I stand firmly against their efforts, and any other foreign power that wants to interfere in our election.”
    >
    > Reiterating his claim from Wednesday night’s debate, Sanders suggested some of the online vitriol blamed on his supporters may be coming from Russia.
    >
    > “Some of the ugly stuff on the internet attributed to our campaign may well not be coming from real supporters,” Sanders said.
    >

  17. Reddit, this is an opportunity for some serious learning. This platform is loaded with propaganda on all sides, and from countless sources with countless interests.

If you are with Bernie, **get off of Reddit and get into the streets. Canvass, phone bank, register people to vote, and attend demonstrations.**

Stop pretending that consuming daily media and upvoting or downvoting it or commenting on it is a form of active effort. It isn’t. We are nothing but propaganda pawns if we aren’t *physically out in the street.*

  18. Win/Win for Putin:

Trump Wins: 4 more years of a puppet that will destroy America

Sanders Wins: Illegitimate Election! Russia helped Bernie cheat! There’s no way he could get THAT many votes! The government must not change hands until we get to the bottom of this (aka never)!

  19. [The brilliance of this new type of authoritarianism is that instead of simply oppressing opposition, as had been the case with 20th-century strains, it climbs inside all ideologies and movements, exploiting and rendering them absurd. One moment Surkov would fund civic forums and human-rights NGOs, the next he would quietly support nationalist movements that accuse the NGOs of being tools of the West. With a flourish he sponsored lavish arts festivals for the most provocative modern artists in Moscow, then supported Orthodox fundamentalists, dressed all in black and carrying crosses, who in turn attacked the modern-art exhibitions. The Kremlin’s idea is to own all forms of political discourse, to not let any independent movements develop outside of its walls. Its Moscow can feel like an oligarchy in the morning and a democracy in the afternoon, a monarchy for dinner and a totalitarian state by bedtime.](https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/11/hidden-author-putinism-russia-vladislav-surkov/382489/)

  20. This is why as Sanders supporters we need to downvote extremists who push strange agendas, promote conspiracy theories and attack those who support other candidates. They’re trying to divide us.

  21. I’m confused and unsure. And that is exactly what the goal is for the Russian interference.

Do they want to help Trump? Do they think supporting Sanders will drive more and more voters away? Or perhaps they think that if it is widely known they are trying to support Sanders somehow it will trigger investigations and accusations for him. Its hard to say.

But the solution is actually quite simple. Follow what the candidate says. Condemn the extremists and the trolls on both sides. We don’t have to rely on social media or other people to tell us what these candidates stand for. Trump has no filter and Sanders has been steady and up front about his beliefs for decades. And thanks to the internet we can go back years to see what these men have said and what they stand for rather than relying on someone else to tell us.

    Get out and vote, people.

  22. And like a patriot, he publicly told Putin to fuck off. Won’t stop Fox News from smearing him with this like trump hadn’t been getting the same for years.

  23. I’m not a Bernie supporter (although I will vote blue no matter who), but I find it weird that the day the news breaks that Russia is attempting to assist both Sanders and Trump, only the stories Re: the Sanders campaign seem to be getting any real play on cable/network news.

  24. The timing of the release of this info on the eve of the Nevada caucus with Bernie rising in the polls is a little suspicious. Bernie is right to question the motives of Jeff Bezos and the Washington Post on this.

  25. Russia wants Bernie to win the first vote at the convention and have the superdelegates take it away from him and give it to a moderate in the second vote. This would disenfranchise all the young voters and make the turnout in the general really weak. Just like they did in 2016. Gotta hope the DNC can get it together and just back the candidate the people want.

  26. It sucks, but Sanders has responded about as well as he could have. I strongly suspect that Trump is the preferred candidate on the basis that Sanders will likely try to do something to limit Russian interference while Trump openly solicits it.

  27. It’s almost like Russia doesn’t care who wins, but is trying to sow discord, which this is clearly succeeding in doing

  28. Every anti-Bernie person taking this headline and using it as ammo against Bernie are simply playing right into the Russian disinformation machine. Congratulations, you’re doing exactly what Putin wants.
