  1. It’s easy to admit to things you’ll face zero legal consequences for. Of course the rest of us need to follow the law, Republicans are apparently exempt.

  2. Terrible headline. Rohrabacher is only saying he told Assange that he would PETITION Trump for a pardon IF he could provide proof that Russian’s were not behind the DNC hack. That isn’t necessarily a true account of what happened but that is what Rohrabacher is saying so this makes this headline misleading at best.

  3. >“I spoke to Julian Assange and told him if he would provide evidence about who gave WikiLeaks the emails I would petition the president to give him a pardon. He knew I could get to the president.” — Dana Rohrabacher.

So, Trump’s telling the truth. He had nothing to do with this attempted deal.

  4. For those that won’t read the article:

    >”Rohrabacher said that not only did talk of a Trump pardon take place during his meeting, but he also followed up by calling then White House chief of staff John Kelly to discuss the proposal. He did not, however, ever speak to Trump about it, he said.”

The ordering here is key. Rohrabacher approached Assange first and then went to then Chief of staff John Kelly to talk about the idea.

    >”When he spoke to Kelly, the then chief of staff was “courteous” but made no commitment that he would even raise the matter directly with the president. “He knew this had to be handled with care,” Rohrabacher said, and that it could be spun by the news media in ways that would be “harmful” to the president. In fact, Rohrabacher said he never heard anything further from Kelly about the matter, nor did he ever discuss the subject directly with Trump.”

So this isn’t really a smoking gun yet.

  5. Other news sites are reporting this:

“Update: The story appears to have changed dramatically. According to Assange’s lawyer, Rohrabacher, it was him that informed Gen. Kelly that “Assange would provide information about the purloined DNC emails in exchange for a pardon,” but never heard back from the White House.”

  6. The headline yesterday at the top of many reddit subs was something like: *”Trump offered Assange a pardon if he LIED and said the emails didn’t come from Russia!”*

Today an article is posted that confirms:

    A: Trump wasn’t involved and didn’t offer a pardon.

B: Assange wasn’t asked to lie, he was asked for evidence. Which he may or may not still provide if it doesn’t compromise his real source.

C: Both Rohrabacher and Assange continue to believe that the emails didn’t come from Russia as Assange said in the past.

And somehow redditors are in the comments like: *”Hah! What now, Trump apologists?”*

  7. Rohrabacher’s [official statement](https://www.rohrabacher.com/news):

“There is a lot of misinformation floating out there regarding my meeting with Julian Assange so let me provide some clarity on the matter:

At no time did I talk to President Trump about Julian Assange.  Likewise, I was not directed by Trump or anyone else connected with him to meet with Julian Assange. I was on my own fact finding mission at personal expense to find out information I thought was important to our country.  I was shocked to find out that no other member of Congress had taken the time in their official or unofficial capacity to interview Julian Assange.  At no time did I offer Julian Assange anything from the President because I had not spoken with the President about this issue at all.  However, when speaking with Julian Assange, I told him that if he could provide me information and evidence about who actually gave him the DNC emails, I would then call on President Trump to pardon him. At no time did I offer a deal made by the President, nor did I say I was representing the President. Upon my return, I spoke briefly with Gen. Kelly. I told him that Julian Assange would provide information about the purloined DNC emails in exchange for a pardon. No one followed up with me including Gen. Kelly and that was the last discussion I had on this subject with anyone representing Trump or in his Administration.

Even though I wasn’t successful in getting this message through to the President I still call on him to pardon Julian Assange, who is the true whistleblower of our time.  Finally, we are all holding our breath waiting for an honest investigation into the murder of Seth Rich. “

  8. Ole propoganda news media spinning this any way they can to make this look nefarious and illegal as usual.

For much of 2016, Assange himself insisted that Russia was not responsible for the hacked emails. In August 2016 Assange implied that the source for the emails was a former Democratic Party staff member who had been murdered a month before. Wikileaks even offered a $20,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the conviction of the murderer. So why would Trump offer Assange a pardon to say something Assange had already been saying?

Assange’s lawyers also say that there was an emissary who offered Assange the deal: former Republican Representative Dana Rohrabacher. He, too, has also already spoken about the possible pardon deal, in a 2017 interview with the Wall Street Journal. He said that Assange would have been required to provide proof, preferably in the form of a hard drive or computer storage device, that the emails came from a whistle-blower and not Russia. “He would get nothing, obviously, if what he gave us was not proof,” Rohrabacher said.

That changes the story. According to Rohrbacher, to get a pardon Assange would have needed to provide evidence debunking the consensus of the U.S. intelligence community that Russia was responsible for the hack. It’s akin to asking a witness to aid an investigation.

  9. >Rohrabacher said that not only did talk of a Trump pardon take place during his meeting, but he also followed up by calling then White House chief of staff John Kelly to discuss the proposal. **He did not, however, ever speak to Trump about it, he said.**

How are politicians offering Trump pardons without even talking to Trump about it? Is that how politicians do things these days?

  10. Yesterday: Trump offered to pardon assange if he said the Russians didnt give Wikileaks the info .

Today, in a still misleading headline: Rohrabacher said he would petition for a pardon if assange said who gave Wikileaks the info

Truth: this dude floated a deal before he ever discussed it with anyone at the White House, and when he did Gen Kelly didnt even take it to Trump.

This is why people call the media fake news.

  11. “I spoke to Julian Assange and told him if he would provide evidence about who gave WikiLeaks the emails I would petition the president to give him a pardon,” Rohrabacher said. “He knew I could get to the president.”

Do any of you happen to see the difference between the misleading title of the article and the actual statement from Rohrabacher?

  12. It is worth pointing out that Rohrabacher has been pro-Russia for many years. He defended the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, was against imposing sanctions against them and voted against giving military aid to Ukraine.

Has been documented meeting with a number of Russian lobbyists on multiple occasions, most notably Rinat Akhmetshin, the former Soviet counterintelligence officer turned lobbyist who was present for the infamous Trump Tower meeting in 2016.

He was named as one of two congressmen who took Russian money through Paul Manafort during the Manafort trial in 2018.

The pardon was offered to Assange in 2017 while Rohrabacher was still in office, protecting him from a violation of the Logan Act. However, whether he actually had any authorization to offer a pardon is debatable.

  13. /r/Wikileaks was denying those meeting up and down, now hours later it’s confirmed. What say you now? Oh, they banned me for disagreeing.
